Get Informed: Pain Management
What should I ask my doctor?
Don't wait until you're in severe pain to talk to your doctor – the treatment of pain is easier when it is mild. Ask your doctor or pain specialist to explain:
- What is causing my pain?
- What is the treatment plan?
- What are the benefits of this approach?
- What are the negative side effects – sleepiness, itching, nausea, constipation? How long will they last and how are they treated?
- What should I monitor and call you about?
- What should I do if my pain worsens?
- When will you check again to see how I am responding to this treatment plan?
- What is the cost of this medication? Is there a lower-cost option?
- Are there other useful approaches? Can I use treatments such as relaxation and breathing exercises, massage or cold/heat packs?
- Can you help me find a pharmacy that carries the medicines you are prescribing?
